What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia or fibromyalgia syndrome[1] is a poorly recognized rheumatic disease that is complicated to treat. Fibromyalgia is most common in middle-aged women (onset between the ages of 20 and 50), and is characterized by intense joint and muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disorders, insomnia and/or mood disorders

Diagnosing fibromyalgia can take some time, as the symptoms and pain of fibromyalgia are quite similar to those associated with other chronic illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, migraines and so on. There is no single symptom present, and this does not help to identify fibromyalgia.

Although fibromyalgia has a certain tendency to stabilize with age and does not lead to the appearance of muscle damage, it is already a real handicap in the lives of those who suffer from it[2].

What causes fibromyalgia?

The causes of fibromyalgia can be traced back to several factors, and scientific studies are still underway to define them exactly. To name but a few: major emotional stress suffered in childhood or adolescence and repeated in adulthood, dysfunction of certain areas of the brain and a physiological abnormality of the nervous and hormonal systems (reduced levels of certain neurotransmitters such as glutamate and serotonin), or certain genetic factors.

Miracle cure for sufferers: cannabidiol (CBD) therapy?

To relieve the intense pain caused by fibromyalgia, one proposed solution is to take CBD, which is found naturally in cannabis or hemp at CBD levels ranging from 1 to 4%.

It's essential to distinguish CBD from THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a molecule present in cannabis resin at a level of 10 to 30%, which has psychoactive effects responsible for euphoria. Cannabidiol or CBD has no psychoactive effects, unlike THC, which is not legal[3]. Still the subject of extensive scientific research, CBD is said to have highly beneficial effects on the immune system, as well as on energy and inflammatory balance.

The effects of Cannabidiol (CBD) on fibromyalgia

One of the causes of fibromyalgia is a lack of serotonin in the brain(as is the case for many diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's and polyarthritis, which require solutions and ingredients linked to chronic pain management).

Taking and using CBD, in liquid oil or plant form, has a positive and useful medical impact on the serotonin system.

Although the mechanism of this impact has not yet been fully understood, CBD is thought to interact with 3 different serotonin receptors: 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A and 5-HT3A, and to have a positive impact on the serotonin system and therefore on fibromyalgia-related problems, but the properties of this mechanism remain to be discovered.

In the case of fibromyalgia, for example, some research shows a marked reduction in stress and chronic pain thanks to the natural anxiolytic properties of cannabidiol, in oil or other form. CBD improves sleep and mood, and acts on certain key factors in fibromyalgia. In a 2014 study conducted on cannabis by the National Pain Foundation, a fibromyalgia patients' association[4], 62% of the 1,400 people tested felt a marked improvement in their pain, and 33% a slight improvement. So, although analyses are still underway to prove conclusively the impact of cannabidiol on fibromyalgia, many sufferers use it to relax and ease their pain.

CBD oils: How to use them?

CBD can be taken in various forms, including oils to be ingested or applied to the painful area.

In the case of Full Spectrum CBD oil, all you need to do is apply a few drops ofCBD oil oil on the tongue.

The benefits will be felt after about 20 minutes and the amount of oil will be adjusted according to the balance found. For cases of fibromyalgia, a dose of 10 to 100 mg per day is recommended, depending on your weight and your reaction to CBD. There's no known risk of overdosing, but pay close attention to fatigue. If it becomes more intense than usual, you've reached the dosage limit.
